For this Bethesda dining room, the design started with a wallpaper—specifically, a deep-red Zoffany paper embossed with a gold flower motif. It set the tone for a bold, worldly aesthetic our longtime clients were excited to embrace.
We furnished the space with eclectic pieces in warm wood tones, from a Century table with an ebony inlay to a textile geometric-floral host chairs paired with woven side chairs. Instead of a traditional chandelier, we hung a cluster of hammered-iron pendants that cast a beautiful, moody glow in the evenings. A sculptural bar cabinet completes the room and keeps entertaining effortless.
This dining room proves that drama can feel just as inviting as tradition.

The holidays are here, and for many of us, the dining room becomes the center of the celebration. In this Fairfax home, our clients wanted to refresh their dining room while repurposing their existing dark-wood furniture and crystal chandelier.
When we showed them a beautiful embroidered linen from Cowtan & Tout, everything clicked. That botanical-print textile became the jumping-off point for the entire design—establishing a sophisticated palette of bisque, taupe, blues, and teals. We wrapped the walls in a soft blue Phillip Jeffries grasscloth, elevated the window treatments with ombré fringe, and layered in complementary velvets on the chairs.
This traditional-yet-lively dining room proves that a classic space can still feel fresh, personal, and holiday-ready.

For my new followers—welcome! I’m Andrea Houck, founder of A. Houck Designs. Since 2000, my team and I have been creating spaces you’ll love…traditional, modern, or somewhere in between®.
My work has been featured in Elle Decor, Flower Magazine, The Washington Post, and more, and I share updates and inspiration here and on my blog Creating Spaces ®.
Originally from North Carolina, I’ve called the DC area home since 1989. When I’m not designing, I’m enjoying time with my husband, kids, and grandkids—or exploring all the region has to offer.
So glad you’re here!
This family room is one of our all-time favorites—and it even earned a First Place Award of Excellence from ASID. With a faux-finished fireplace, rich textures, and a nature-inspired palette, it’s a space made for gathering and relaxing.
Just beyond the French doors, the screened porch offers a seamless connection to the outdoors. Durable Brown Jordan furnishings, custom pillows, and layered earth-toned neutrals using Lee Jofa fabrics, Kravet upholstery, and Michael James Custom Furniture tables, make it a spot to enjoy the view in every season.
